The {Tour} de Cure

For those who know me,  they know that I got my start in endurance sports by training with The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Team in Training program.  I absolutely cannot say enough good things about this program.  The support that the program provided, the people who I met and the cause that we were training for all inspired and moved me.  We don’t even have to get into the fact that my little involvement in endurance sports grew from that into what it is today.  People…. I was inspired.  I still am.

Team in Training will always hold a very special place in my heart and truth be told I’m waiting for the right time to do an event with them again.  I will always be the athlete on the course that says go team when I see the purple coming.  There’s nothing quite like that experience.

My first really big finish line.  Running and Fundraising!

It’s in this spirit that I signed up for the Saratoga Springs Tour de Cure 100 mile bike ride.  This is a charity ride for the American Diabetes Association.  This is another cause that I truly stand behind.  So many people who I know have been affected by diabetes.  Many more will be in my life time.  I am really looking forward to this ride.  I have watched the event go off and seen several of my friends head out there each year.  The camaraderie, the hopeful spirit and just the genuine compassion that you witness while out there is once again, inspiring.

On a personal note, this will be my first 100 mile bike ride… ever.  It will be a great opportunity to get a long ride in even though we aren’t planning to go fast…. Right L? But on a serious note, I am looking forward to this event.  I’m looking forward to being a part of something that is bigger than just me and in hopefully making a difference, even if small, in someone else’s life.  I’m also sure that it will be a day filled with laughter, packing face and good stories to share so stay tuned.

So what about you?  Are you a charity racer?  I’ve looked at so many of these programs and so many of them provide great opportunities.  What are your thoughts? Would you do it?  Is there a race/program that you’re already looking at? Come on people…. spill it.

After four years of endurances races, I’m participating in my first TNT program for the Nike Women’s Half Marathon in April. I had no idea what to expect, but it wasn’t much. But I TOTALLY agree with you now that I’ve been around the program. The folks over at TNT are an amazing bunch of people and my experience with them has been fantastic. I hope your experience with Tour de Cure is just as successful. Good luck!
